Summer Intern Estimating Workshop with Chief Estimator Sam Johnson

This summer CMSWillowbrook had the opportunity to mentor 5 outstanding Interns to work our job-sites. Last week they participated in a one day estimating workshop with our Chief Estimator Sam Johnson. The day included games, life lessons and goal setting.

Sam states that he loves to volunteer to teach the Interns no only because it’s fun, but it gets him out of his comfort zone. “I have been taught to not be afraid and to just get out there. By teaching, presenting, and helping others it helps me in return.” Sam wanted to not only share his wisdom in estimating but wanted to include life lessons and what makes each individual aware of their goals and how to achieve them.

Sam highlighted ways to be successful in their future careers and life in general. He spoke about safety, work life balance, effective communication, your personal value, the value you bring to the company, always tell the truth, be on time and above all have fun.

During the workshop the Interns had to hard bid a Lego structure just from looking at a photo, then had to build the structure and finish within a certain time limit. Curve balls were thrown their way with “Oklahoma Wind” from a fan, missing pieces and a surprise inspector, our very own Trey Schick. This demonstrated real life situations they will come in contact with in their future careers. Sam stated “It won’t always be unicorns and rainbows.” He means it may not always go the way you planned but it’s how you handle it and what you make of it that brings success.

Jared Kerr, a Senior at the University of Oklahoma, said what he learned while interning for CMSWillowbrook. “If you pay attention to details at the start, you will save several headaches at the end.”

The Interns unanimously stated they learned communication is a key role to success. John Madison, a Senior at Oklahoma State University, said “I have learned mostly how to communicate with subcontractors effectively and keeping to schedule.”
